Down Home Rag is his oldest surviving single, recorded in 1916 and released the following year. In 1917 he started playing jazz- this single, a clarinet solo, is his greatest ragtime single. Down Home Rag had been a hit for Fred Van Eps in 1914. But Sweatman was African-American and very few 'race' records were released before jazz broke.
