The Alexander Mosaic, dating from circa 100 BCE, depicts the Battle of Issus, (333 BCE) between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. The mosaic adorned one of the exedras on the north side of the peristyle of the House of the Faun in Pompeii. The original is preserved in the Naples National Archaeological Museum.

The Alexander Mosaic is a Roman floor mosaic. Before the eruption of 79 AD, Pompeii was damaged by a powerful earthquake in AD 62. It seems that the House of the Faun was damaged but later repaired and rebuilt. Excavations have found five bodies of people who perished in the building during the eruption (including three boys and one woman).
