Jainendra K. Jain received his Ph.D. in 1985 from Stony Brook University, where he returned in 1989 as a faculty member, before moving to Pennsylvania State University in 1998 as the Erwin W. Such performance metric is important since the mean indicates average returns and the variance indicates risk or fairness.
