Tilopa received the teachings of Mahamudra directly from Vajradhara and Vajrayogini. He received the special Dakini hearing lineage. He transmitted both of these teachings to Naropa (1016-1100). And then Naropa passed them on to his Tibetan disciple Marpa Chokyi Lodro (1012-1096). Similarly, Jetsun Milarepa was the principal Dharma heir of Marpha.

Naropa spent a total of twelve years with Tilopa. At the bank of Bagmati River in Nepal, on the site of the Pashupatinath Temple, there is the cave where he was initiated by Tilopa and attained siddhi. Later in his life Naropa stayed in Phullahari, where he died aged 85. Phullahari or Pullahari was located most likely in eastern Bihar or Bengal.
