Née en 1923, originaire de Lunel d'une famille de vignerons, Mithé Espelt ne restera très attachée à sa région camarguaise. Bercée dans l'ambiance artistique de son grand-père, Edmond Baissat, ami entre autres de Frédéric Mistral et du peintre et décorateur Jean Hugo (arrière-petit-fils de Victor Hugo), la jeune enfant apprend tôt le dessin.
