A riccio di mare is an urchin ( Ricci di mare is the plural). A riccio in Italian is also a porcupine. Both of these creatures have spikes and neither are curly so I have yet to fathom why the name 'riccio' is applicable to both of these creatures. As to why they are called "urchins" in English - who knows?
